A Mock Sun, also called a Sun Dog or Phantom Sun, is a visual phenomenon that makes for the appearance of three Suns. And while Mock Suns are not actual suns, they’re not exactly not suns either — they still make us squint. They are visual manifestations of complex interplays between light, its scattering, ice in the clouds, the angle of view, and other natural interactions between the world and our senses. Mock Suns offer a space where vision, perception, the real, and the unreal coexist, together failing at clean delineation. The works in this exhibition similarly approach failed accounts of the real, real accounts of the failed, sensual deception, and visual play.

Mock Sun

This exhibition looks at the influence and connections of Bolinas’ artistic history with the hope of recognizing and opening new conversations between coastal Marin-affiliated artists and practices and those in the wider creative landscape. The exhibition highlights specific qualities that illustrate Bolinas’ unique history and those that place this area and its creative ethos into larger conversations. The works in this exhibition come from a range of artists and locales but are meant to be a conversation, sometimes broad, sometimes more intimate, and hopefully sometimes surprising, that considers the varied places, terrains, and histories that link a small beach hamlet to the global discourse.

Ivan Iannoli is a multi-disciplinary artist, designer, and educator based in San Francisco. His work is concerned with finding connections among disparate practices, materials, and discourses, and his curatorial interests are no different. Ivan has exhibited his work in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, the UK, and Mexico City. Before its closing in 2021, Ivan was an assistant professor of photography at the San Francisco Art Institute. He’s also taught at UC Davis, San Jose State University, and UCLA. He is currently an adjunct professor at CCA, where he teaches in the photography, painting first-year and graduate fine arts programs. He holds a BA from Columbia University and an MFA from UCLA. He is finishing up an MA in Humanities at San Francisco State University, where his thesis research focuses on visual literacy, visual culture, and arts pedagogy.
